447th Bomb Group B-17G, 15 inches x 28 inches, oil on gessoed Masonite panel.
I have recently completed enlarging, transferring & redrawing the B-17G from my pencil study of of last December to its 15 inch x 28 inch gessoed panel support!! Working larger has allowed me to revise it slightly & add greater detail, particularly to the crewmen depicted in the cockpit & the bombardier seated behind the transparent nose blister. Yesterday I sealed it with three coats of clear acrylic to protect the graphite so I can paint it with glazes of oil colors. After the sealer has cured for at least three days, I'll start painting!

Please feel free to comment via the e-mail link below as I always look forward to your feedback.

I'm pleased to announce that "The Sleeping Naiad" & two of my pencil studies have been accepted as finalists in the Gadsden Art Association's 56th Annual Juried Show!

The exhibition will be open from July 7th through August 25th, 2014 with the Opening Reception & Awards Ceremony being held on July 13th, 2014, 2pm - 4pm at the Gadsden Museum of Art, 515 Broad Street in downtown Gadsden, Alabama.

The two pencil studies that have been accepted are below. One is the figure design I did for "The Sleeping Naiad"; the other is a study of an Italian World War II fighter plane, the Macchi-Castoldi MC202 Folgore, both of which are shown below.

"Heroes of the Sky", the children's book that I have illustrated & designed has been approved for publication!
I am very pleased to announce that the book design & illustration work that I have been involved with since mid-March will be going to publication in time for release this coming September.

(Please scroll down to read more...)

Back in late March I was asked via Facebook e-mail by Ms. Christy Broady, President of the H. Weir Cook Memorial Project - Indiana & founder of the Indiana Air Museum, if - as an aviation artist - I could do renderings of helicopters as cartoon characters! I told her that I wasn't a dedicated cartoonist, but as a devoted illustrator I felt capable of doing the job!

During a subsequent phone call she elaborated her vision to me of being able to provide educational books to children who attended helicopter displays conducted by the Indiana Air Search & Rescue Service, whose H-13 Sioux & UH-1D Huey aircraft were finished in Vietnam War era markings. She had already obtained the support of Indiana author Scott Baker Sweeney, who generously donated the story for the book, & the support of the Howard County (Indiana) Vietnam Veterans Organization, whose members have raised the money to pay for the publishing. Along the way, I also offered to volunteer my services as a graphic designer to give the book its finished look & prepare it for digital pre-press.

During this discourse, I became infected with Christy's passionate enthusiam to create something that the Vietnam veterans could share with their grandchildren that would help these kids understand their grandparents' war & honor the memory of those who names are engraved on the face of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The book is due to be released during the Howard County Vietnam Veterans 32nd Annual Reunion that will be conducted September 18th, 19th, 20th & 21st, 2014 in Greentown, IN. To learn more about the Howard County Vietnam Veterans Organization, visit their webpage at: www.hcvvo.net .

To learn more about how you may acquire a copy of "Heroes of the Sky" or help Christy Broady with a donation for this worthy cause, visit her webpage at: H. Weir Cook Memorial Project .

Below are images of the helicopter characters that I have designed & rendered (from top to bottom): "Huey" - the UH-1D Iroquois general utility helicopter, "Tooie" - the CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter, & "Sioux" - the H-13 Sioux recon helicopter.

A missive from an artist friend of his framed copy of "Fair Skies Over England"!!
I recently received this image via Facebook from my artist friend, Dale Jackson of Bellflower, California. Earlier this year he had ordered one of my "Fair Skies Over England" 13 inch x 19 inch digital Giclee prints. Once he managed to get it framed, he shared this image of the print propped up in front of his F-18 Hornet model in his office at Living Waters Publications where he works as a graphic artist.

It is always a pleasure to hear back from a satisfied customer!!

I still have a few of these available, so if you would like to go to my gallery page to order one of your own or for a gift, click HERE .

Today I am sharing my progress on TWO ongoing projects; the 447th Bomb Group B-17G, & the other, the first of a new group of paintings I am calling "The Cornerstone Series":

447th Bomb Group B-17G, 15 inches x 28 inches, oil on gessoed Masonite panel.
As you can see in the image below, I have been making steady progress on adding color to the sky & clouds behind the bomber, slowly, but surely "killing" any sign of the underlying graphite drawing as I build up the layers of paint!

The Cornerstone Series #1, 16 inches x 20 inches, oil on gessoed Masonite panel.
Below are two images showing my progress; the first is the completed graphite "Grisaille" drawing of values that is sealed with clear acrylic to prepare it for overpainting with color glazes, the second image shows where I am as of today in applying color to this new figure work!

As always, I look forward to your feedback, so please make a comment via e-mail about this post by clicking HERE.

Today I have a progress update on "The Cornerstone Series", oil on panel, 16 inches x 20 inches.

As you can see in the image below, I've been making steady progress adding volume, softness, depth, & strength of color to the the model's flesh - slowly, but surely, "killing" signs of the underlying graphite drawing as the layers of paint build up!
